What you need for your 2025/26 tax return: a checklist

Most delays with a tax return come down to one missing document. This is the list we work from for 2025/26 returns, the tax year 6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026.

Employment and pensions

  • P60 for each job, or P45 if you left during the year.
  • P11D if you received benefits such as a company car or private medical cover.
  • Pension income statements, including the State Pension amount.

Company directors

  • Dividend vouchers or a schedule of dividends paid.
  • Your director's loan account balance at the year end, if it was overdrawn.

Self-employment

  • Income and expenses for the year, or your accounts if they are prepared separately.
  • Details of any equipment or vehicles bought or sold.
  • Use of home and mileage records.

Property

  • Rent received and letting agent statements.
  • Repairs, insurance, agent fees and other costs.
  • Mortgage interest statements. Relief is given as a 20% tax credit rather than a deduction.

Savings, investments and gains

  • Bank and building society interest.
  • Dividends from shares held personally.
  • Details of any shares, property or other assets sold, with purchase costs.
  • Any UK residential property gains already reported within the 60-day window.

Reliefs and other items

  • Personal pension contributions you made.
  • Gift Aid donations.
  • Child Benefit received, if either of you earned over £60,000.
  • Student loan details.
  • Any foreign income.

Send what you have and we will chase the rest. We prepare and file returns for directors, sole traders and landlords on a fixed fee. See our personal tax page.
